History of India is as diverse as the many cultures and traditions which are found in the country. The rich history and culture of India can also be found in its amazing architecture and monuments which are found all over the country. There are many historical monuments all over the country which were built in different times by different rulers. Each of them has used some special skills to glorify their rule, their religion and their beliefs. The monuments of India are a good source to have knowledge about Indian history and its culture. 

From Indus Valley to British Rule: Historical Monuments in India

The roots of all Indian monuments can be found in the ruins of Indus Valley Civilisation which was an architectural marvel. The great bath, pool, drainage system and everything which was constructed in the monuments are still a topic of study today. Historical monuments in India which was built in the ancient times had religious and spiritual angle to it. 

There were a number of kings which promoted the state religion by making Stupas, temples, monasteries and other pilgrimage sites. The most notable among them being the ones built by emperor Ashoka and later Mauryan rulers in India. The Sun temple in Konark and the many amazing rock cut temples all over India are also a fine examples of the amazing Indian monuments.

The medieval Indian history also produced some gem of monuments under the different rulers. The most notable among them were those built by Rajput kings and the Mughal rulers in the country. Historical Indian monuments also included the buildings like forts, palaces and temples. The Mughal architecture is also known for its splendour. The most famous are Red Fort and Taj Mahal. These were built by the best architects and workers which were called from modern day Iran. 

Later the monuments in India were built by the British. This was a time when modernity in architecture took its place and many of the modern British architecture made its way in India. The Victoria Memorial, Lutyens Delhi and other monuments built in princely states of India by the British made Indian architects to experiment with Indian and western styles. 

There are many artistic artefacts of the monuments available also in the form of paintings, prints, sculptures and old photographs. There are many online galleries also which have good collection of these photographs and paintings on Indian monuments along with the information of their builders.
